Vermilion Crossing is the site of a fairly recent forest fire burn that now creates a great spot for backcountry skiing. In the time between the previous forest and the new one growing back, the opened area hosts a deeper and more skiable snowpack than it normally would. While climbing through charred trees and faint winter clouds, the stark contrast between burn and freeze is an oddity.
